The first time Phillipa saw Beau, a three year old child was standing underneath him, stroking his tummy with a broom!
"He didn't mind; that was his exceptional nature" his owner Phillipa explained. "He was a kind gentleman who was loved and trusted by all. An old soul who instinctively knew what you were thinking."
Beau was a strong, reliable and dependable hunter, just the type you want out on the hunt field. But sadly, he passed away before his time.
Losing a special horse is one thing, but to lose two special sport horses within two years of each other when you are only 17 years old is a tough life lesson in horsemanship. I recently borrowed a few equestrian items from a friend of mine for a photoshoot. Two of those items were trinket boxes, made from actual horse hooves (pictured below). It wasn’t until after the shoot that I noticed an inscription on the top of one of the hoof lids
“PAWKY” DAM OF “ABOYEUR” DERBY WINNER 1913.
I was intrigued, so I googled ‘Pawky’ and ‘Aboyeur’ and was astonished at what I discovered. It was no ordinary Derby that Aboyeur had won, but the infamous 1913 Epsom Derby in Britain.
The 1913 Derby had all the makings of a top grossing film with themes of tragedy, scandal, winning against all odds, British royalty and the Titanic thrown in for good measure.
Reaching retirement is a wonderful milestone, and one that Diana Sonerson chose to mark for her special dressage horse Southern Boy with a Framed Horseshoe Memento.
The original horseshoe had the nails firmly rusted in place.
